The Boss' Prawn Mee, Kam Heong, PJ State

Saturday AM: Pre-dawn lucid dreaming about Penang Hokkien mee (or Prawn Mee in KL). I wake up and realise waiting till my next visit back to the island is no longer an option; something here will have to do right now! I get a tip-off from Mel, Kam Heong in PJ State and recall reading about this over at Masak-masak's.

Kam Heong is on one of the rows of old shoplots surrounding the MPPJ building with no discernible English signboard except for the KTV outlet's on top of it...

The Boss... of Prawn Mee goodness is in the house!

The incarnate subject of my dream arrives, more real, more substantial, more edible! One sip of the soup confirms that this is not just any weedy stand-in for one of Penang's culinary luminaries. It is full-bodied, reflecting the hours, care and pride that flank its preparation.

Ingredients are unstinting and at RM4.50 per bowl, the serving is appropriately bigger than the standard Penang's. The soup is more pork than prawn though, which doesn't necessarily d0 justice to the Prawn Mee moniker for those who seek heavier notes of shellfish in the soup.

I also pick up curry puff from the Mon Kee siew pau stall for a snack later. The pastry is SWEET, the curry extra spicy, rendering this one weird concoction. I notice a lot of similar stalls using common pastry for both savoury & sweet fillings - am I the only one who has a problem with this? Would the two camps of fillings not require parallel ratios of sodium to lactose?

I personally feel that KL prawn mee is slightly different from PG hokkien mee, but each has its own goodness in taste.

no wonder it sounds so familiar! i was there a few months back and tried a bit of everything from the kopitiam. the prawn mee to me, was quite bland. but i must say variety is good in this kopitiam. "happening" environment as well, haha!

Allie, not had a lot of encounters with KL prawn mee but this one's a-OK, given the fact that my Penang cravings are kicking in overtime!

Yin, is it Kemaman time of the year again?! I am absolutely needing an authentic lekor & nasi dagang refuel. Blog soon, and more more pictures please!

Boo, yeah, parking a real turn-off here! That Sat morning was eerily easy though... found one in the alley right next to it!

J2Kfm, eh, what Durian Dessert shop is this? Don't care if it's not in the same area, WHERE is this place??

Joe, liau to the max! I am liking how the servings are so substantial here!

UnkaLeong, hey hello hello! Yes, Yong Len is also top on my list, I hear it's the bomb!

I have yet to taste any hokkien mee @ KL. Will keep this in mind.

Bangsar Babe, see, I can understand sweet pastry for Char Siew Sou but not for curry puffs! OK, in that case, I'll give them another go!

Nic, yes, happening is exactly how I'd describe this. Still want to go back to try the CKT, the porridge, the wantan mee, ooh the anticipation kills!

Foodbin, ooh prawn mee family ties? Must try his bro's version! Thanks for the tip!

The Nomad Gourmand, it's OK, considering how the prawn mee craving was causing me to have spasms! I think there're better ones out there in Klang Valley though, must be more hardworking and search harder!
