You Shall Eat Well in Penang

Who ever gets tired of Penang food porn? Not me!

So while I try to sift through the massive collection of random food photographs amassed in the camera and figure out what the hell to do with them (how do food bloggers do it? Do you guys make notes? Impose a post deadline?), here's another edition of more friendly food finds on sunny island.

Penang Curry Mee arrived at the perpetually packed New Cathay Coffee Shop, Pulau Tikus. I like this version because the curry is a notch thicker than average but not as loaded as the curry laksas down south. Cloud Nine mornings are made of this.

We also visited the poorly ventilated Sin Kim San Coffee Shop on Macalister Road. The Curry Chee Cheong Fun gets top marks with the olds because of the healthy chunks of chicken on smooth silken rice rolls. Didn't fancy the plasticware it came in, but I could definitely appreciate the robust gravy.

Also at Sin Kim San was Koay Chiap, a craft that is slowly but surely dying. The stall here serves up a perfectly worthy bowl of this herbal and somber delicacy, the handmade rice noodles springier to the spoon compared to the famed Kimberly Street's version.

To round off this day of eating well in Penang was a serving of Stewed Pork Leg, served with rice. The pork was fatty and invoked varying levels of lust. While not the best around, it was still very satisfying.

Yikes, not only have I never eaten koay chiap, I've never even heard of it! Any idea if it's available in KL?
Are those evocative street names in Penang also expected to be an endangered breed? How long before macalister road is renamed jalan tun datuk something?

I dunno about the food bloggers, but I usually just post when I have the time and the inclination. Easiest not to give one too much pressure to post but do it when inspiration strikes. :)

P.S. I can't believe I haven't blogged about the Penang food scene yet despite countless trips there already... :P

LOL - Well, food porn is always good, where ever the source (although Penang is always particularly lust inducing!)...

Ah I miss Penang food! No prizes guessing what's for lunch later :P

Penang's hawker food is the best. Bar none. :)
I usually try to post the good ones asap, then the mediocre ones when there's nothing else to write.

Sean, I came to the knowledge of koay chiap pretty late in life too. I'd often assumed this was found only in Pg and a quick Google search pretty much reaffirmed that. As for the street names, they actually started doing that a while back, only to be overpowered by public outcry. If we continue to be loud enough, we may keep those intact for longer than the koay chiap legacy.

LFB, well right now I just want to see those Jap posts coming fast and furious! :-P Sometimes, I feel I need to have a more structured approach to blogging and archiving. But then again, this is a platform so unlike work that I have to remind myself that it IS okay to run it haphazardly! :-)

BlancaMcleroy1230, thanks!

Unkaleong, it's 1.30PM and I've not yet had my first meal of the day! Curry mee right now would hit the spot!

Joe, yes I do that too, but what about distinct impressions of the dining experience? I find that byt the time I actually sit down to attempt to blog, mine get watered down, both good and bad.

J, which brings me back to my dilemma for the week - do I make a trip back this weekend or not? Surprise Mom for Mother's Day and oh er... have some grub while I'm there, of course! :-P

iamthewitch, so what was lunch? Not one of those half hearted Penang wannabes??

J2Kfm, so there needs to be effort to post sooner rather than later. I suppose the good places deserve at least that.

Agree! I don't get to go to Penang often but when I do, it's eating all day long! What's there not to like about Penang food!

I'm not sure if I consider myself a food blogger (really!) but I usually blog about what I remember. That usually indicates that it's worth blogging, I think. :D
