The slew of late alcohol-fuelled nights has been unkind to mornings after. One surefire way to help one back to basic humanoid functionality is to head out for a substantial breakfast.
This particular morning, we headed to the ever-popular New Cathay kopitiam on Burmah Road, opposite Bellisa Row. This place is buzzing all the time, with both Penang folk and out-of-towners who have descended upon the island this season. There are a handful of stalls, dishing up guaranteed goodness.
I made a beeline for the Char Hor Fun, one of the best I've tasted in the area.
For RM4, you get a generous serving of flat broad rice noodles fried to a golden-brown hue, doused with a gorgeous gravy and topped with a half cooked egg. Stir in the egg, dump in the pickled green chillies and you're ready to continue your year-end hedonistic binge!
The stall is manned solo by an auntie, so it's understandable she gets grouchy when the heat is on, such as packed mornings like this.
The Koay Chiap with duck meat here is decent as well. No kick ass special chilli sauce like Kimberley Street's though - here, they serve this plain with bird's eye chilli in soy sauce.
Margarined toast to round off the meal for some. I like the look of the heap of sugar on the side.

yup, Pg's Char Hor Fun is different from others, more like Wat Tan Hor type.
This might be the answer to my hunt for delish Char Hor Fun which I thought was extinct!
ohh yes, i do agree the hor fun here is good. She is the sister of the hor fun guy selling in P. Tikus.
Besides all the yummy food, their kopi-o is good too...they even sell their coffee powder.
J2Kfm, and that's the way I like it!!
Mellie, it is getting rarer to find super good Char Hor Fun. If you're also partial to dry Char Hor Fun, you should def check out Boey Chong Kee at People's Park, only open for dinners.
Nomad Gourmand, you mean the hor fun supplier in Pulau Tikus? How interesting!
CK Lam, yes I have tried their kopi O, super kau! Must buy me some of their coffee powder before I leave!
Toast with white sugar. Unheard of since a long time ago.
Hmmm... I wondered what happened to my ex-neighbors who were manning the CHF stall there. Maybe he's back in Brunei.. haha.
By the way, it's a surprise you did not try out the curry mee there. It's has that dark chewy cuttle fish, just like the version served in Air Itam.
Moreover the Fried Mee Tiao there is also not bad. It's fried with leeks and dried shrimps.
Some more there's the banana raisins pancake and wan than mee which can be considered quite good.
Hmm... if I'm not mistaken, they are closed on Sunday.

i always passed by this coffee shop, and many times i told hubby i wanna try, he says nothing much there. now with this, guess i can tell hubby i wanna go.
oh, this shop. I notice that the currymee is excellent. Too bad is after the alcaholic nite, else the kick-start with hot and spicy curry mee is a great start.
I normally have the Char Hor Fun at Kwai Lock Coffeeshop in Pulau Tikus. I must go try this place when I'm in Penang! =D
Criz, yeah they are closed on Sundays and agree that the curry mee here is awesome!
New Kid, yup, your hubby can't say no now!
Steven, I have ventured for curry mee even post-alcohol - still as good, still a great day starter! :-P
Bangsar Babe, Kwai Lock is another firm favourite in the area. Love the chee cheong fun there!
This place is highly recommended by my friend too!
