Best Curry Puff from Singapore on Old Klang Road?

Just a quick toe-dip back into the scheme of things:

We were drifting by Bloom Season Bakery at Scott Garden on Old Klang Road after a particularly underwhelming breakfast at Lorong Seratus Tahun when this caught my eye:

Tip Top's claim of offering the best chicken curry puff from Singapore got me all hot and bothered. The average Malaysian would know the feeling - that instant biological reaction to the combination of the words "Best" and "Curry Puff" only savoury curry filling encased in a greasy flaky pocket can mollify. In we went...

The puff came piping hot out from the kitchen (as it was barely 11AM) and certainly very impressive in size. But upon the first bite, the filling punctured my pastry craving, a blow to the gut. Overpowering with curry-powder and not much else. Even the generous quarter of hard-boiled egg failed to lift the package from the league of highway rest stop curry puffs.

Best Curry Puff from Singapore on Old Klang Road? I don't think so!! Keep looking, folks!

the puff looks deceptively perfect though, at least in my book! i like the filling mushy & creamy & not too spicy. plus, i usually feel like a kid who's discovered buried treasure whenever i find a hard-boiled egg in my puff :D

I'll still go with the curry puff from SS2 (the one that has a branch in the underground food alley in Midvalley?) even though it lacks the hard-boiled egg that would have made it perfect.

And I believe I've tasted this particular curry puff whilst I was in Singapore... let's just say the Malaysian and Singaporean tastebuds/preference for curry puffs must differ... :P

Sean, this was missed buried treasure by several inches, sadly. I often wondered about the quarter hard-boiled egg in a puff... why not go the whole hog and stuff in a half, or even one whole egg!?

Kenny, yes Homi's from SS2 trumps this definitely, but do you also find that the MV kiosk's version is a pale shadow of what it used to be? I have still yet to find the perfect puff... I do wish they sold IKEA's curry puffs from vending machines at every corner of the street!

The "best curry puff" statement does not irk me. But placing Singapore at the end of it is just a tall order la. it's like saying, "best ramen from singapore" on a tokyo street. hahaha :P (im so bad!!!)

Ciki, you read my mind! "Best ramen from Singapore" sounds absurd but fr Ippudo vs. Tampopo post, it may not be that far-fetched after all! :-P

I didn't know curry puffs are famous in Singapore.

Just a short distance down the road from Scott Garden, along Old Klang Road in front of AmBank, is a roadside stall selling "yu tiao" or Chinese crullers. The stall opensin the afternoon, some time after 2 pm. They also sell curry puff for about RM1.00 each, perhaps 10 or 20 sen more. Try these. I don't think you'll be disappointed for the price.
